01 — The chain
First, perform the instruction you inherited. Then write what the next stranger will do.
00 — The seed
Daniel wrote the first instruction. The first stranger was told it came from the person before her.
She didn’t know. A small fiction to begin the chain.
“How would you enter a room if everyone inside had been waiting for you?”

The Next Stranger is a participatory portrait project by Daniel Hunter.
This work explores the question: “When strangers talk to each other, what do they say?”
In Madison Square Park, each participant received an instruction written by a previous unknown stranger. They embodied the message, then left a new instruction behind for the next.
The result is a chain of public choreography: part portrait, part handwriting, part chance. Every gesture is both an ending and a beginning.
